Paul Wooley, Wichita Magazine's Wichitans of the Year
Wichitans of the Year Wichita has no shortage of standout citizens, but without these 10 individuals Wichita wouldnt be what it is today. From revitalizing crumbling buildings to easing the suffering of those in need, theyve gone beyond the call of duty, giving their time and talents to make our city a better place. They didnt ask to be called heroes, just live like them. Wichita magazine honored those citizens on December 2, 2008. Bridging the Gap Dr. Paul Wooley, Medical Researcher Paul Wooley is interested in airplanes, but its not the freedom of flight or the wonder of defying gravity that rivets the doctor. Rather, its the materials that planes are made of. Theyre light, strong, and somewhat flexible, says Wooley. Those are the properties that human bone replacements should also have. In 2007, Wooley, who researched and taught for 18 years at Wayne State University in Detroit, swapped the auto capital of the world for the air hub to study the possibility of using plane parts in orthopaedic surgeries. His efforts have helped spawn a new branch of research that bridges the gap between Wichitas aviation and medical industries. The end goal is to produce more agile and more affordable inserts that could replace the steel, plastic, and ceramic implants currently used in knee replacements and fracture repairs. In Wooleys first year, he has aligned Via Christs Orthopaedic Research Institute with Wichita States National Institute for Aviation Research, whose researchers first discussed the medical uses of composites 10 years ago. Blueprints have been drafted for a center where key players can collaborate. Wooleys research has already produced prototypes of medical instruments made from plane materials. Ultimately, we see major implant companies really having a presence here, Wooley says. Its a whole new industry, and its not competitive; its complementary. —S.J.C.
